We had the entire trip planned, a long drive with the 3 cars off to Al Ain. All was going well, we got on the road nice and early, constantly passing one another as we drove with me sitting as a passenger in the 2013 Ford Mustang (soon to be featured, check back soon).
We arrived at Jabal Hafeet – best way to describe this place and the drive is like Chapmans Peak in Cape Town, minus a view of the ocean! It was time to head up the mountain and so we did … the GTi naturally a sports car built with good handling capabilities against 2 heavy, rear-wheel, American cars meant it flew up and arrived at the top in no time. I was in the tail happy Chevrolet Lumina SS and hence we took it easy driving up. At the top, we got a nice view of the mountainous area and the dry land below, i set out to speak to the guys and advise them on what I was expecting from the photo shoot etc. Got some shots of the cars together, shots of the drivers and then we decided to head back down, start the braai and wait for the harsh sun to dip a little and provide less harsh photos.
We started the drive back down, and this time i chose to sit in the GTi – it was awesome driving down, but with one lane (as opposed to 2 lanes driving up) and gravity working with us to bring us down faster … one second we were fine, and the next we found ourselves sitting in the car looking at each other in shock. Unfortunately…we lost control and hit the barrier. Definitely not the best feeling seeing the GTi suspension collapsed and rims damaged, but the blessing was that we were fine and not injured.
Nonetheless, as when things are meant to be, they are – and I managed to do a photo shoot of the GTi 2 days before we drove up to Jabal Hafeet. And below … are the results :)
